While visiting Hawaii’s Big Island, I went to Volcanoes National
Park and—guided by a park ranger—I walked on 4-day old
lava. The memory of that very special adventure inspired this quilt.
With great heat and power, Kilauea sends its lava flow through the
cool rainforest and into the ocean. The “Hawaiian-style”
appliqué blocks are my interpretation of the tropical foliage
I admired. A border of waves surrounds this “hot island”.
